We Offer Two Tiers of Service to Meet Your Personal Needs

Tier One

Your first encounter at the Center will be with Dr Shanks, who will spend 2-4 hours (the average consultation time is 3 hours) with you. The total time together will depend on the complexity of your situation. Our goal is to spend as much time as necessary to meet your needs, never cutting a consultation short due to time constraints.

Dr. Shanks will prepare for your first visit with a thorough review of your health questionnaires and past medical records. She will then meet with you and spend as much time as necessary to explore your entire health story, perform a complete physical exam, establish goals with you and help you to craft an initial personalized plan of care. This will include diagnostic testing, a food and lifestyle plan and all necessary therapies to help restore your health.

Your first visit with Dr. Shanks will be followed by a one-hour session with our Functional Nutritionist, Lisa Scranton, to help you implement the prescribed therapeutic food plan. This session is a vital part of the initial Functional Medicine consultation.

First follow-up visit:

This is usually 1.5 hours in length, depending on the complexity of the situation. This time is used to discuss all test results and initial observations about food and lifestyle changes and initial therapies. We continue to develop and expand your personalized care plan.

Subsequent follow up visits with Dr. Shanks:

These are typically one hour in length but we try to maintain flexibility, understanding that people have very different levels of need.

Fees for 2016:

Karyn Shanks, MD: $420 per hour, prorated to time used in 15-minute increments. (*2017 pricing: $440 per hour)

Lisa Scranton, MS, RDN, LD: $200 per hour for visit associated with initial Functional Medicine Consultation. (*2017 pricing: $210 per hour)

Tier Two

Your initial encounter at the Center will be with our Functional Nutrition Specialist, Lisa Scranton, MS, RDN, LD. Your first visit with her will be approximately 90-minutes, though more time is available depending on your level of complexity and need. She will perform a comprehensive food and lifestyle assessment and order appropriate functional testing (this may include nutrition analysis, food sensitivity testing, genetic and metabolic testing and others).

Lisa will partner with you to create a personalized food plan to support your optimal health and vitality goals, discuss the science behind those goals and examine how to implement them in your life. You will leave the session with a comprehensive food plan, which can include daily meal plans and recipes, recommendations for supplements and suggestions for monitoring your nutritional status.

These will be 30-60 minutes in length and will include all follow up assessments needed, review of lab test results and observations regarding food and lifestyle changes undertaken. She will provide ongoing coaching and work closely with you to personalize your healing through food and to support you in your success.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

The Center for Medicine and Healing Arts

The Center for Medicine and Healing Arts was founded in 2001, is the first and premier Functional Medicine center in Iowa, and offers the most comprehensive and in-depth exploration of health and healing in our region.

History of the Center for Medicine and Healing

The Center for Medicine and Healing Arts was founded in 2001 by Karyn M. Shanks, MD as a center dedicated to providing comprehensive, person-oriented healthcare. The Center’s original name, Kylemore Center for Medicine and Healing, was recently modified for greater clarity. During her years providing care as part of an internal medicine practice, and later as the medical director of an integrative medicine center, Karyn felt inspired to better serve the needs of her complex patients and for those wanting to learn how to optimize their health. She has done this by dedicating her practice to Functional Medicine and by establishing a unique office environment and practice model.

The center was located downtown Iowa City until Spring of 2007 when it moved to its current location in the Olde Towne Village development on the NE side of town. Other like-minded and powerhouse practitioners have joined Karyn, and their collaborative team continues to grow and evolve. The Center is the first Functional Medicine center in Iowa and currently provides the most comprehensive and in-depth healthcare in the region.
